Major Breakthrough for Fecal Incontinence

The Connecticut Colorectal Center at PACT Surgical Specialists is pleased to announce the arrival of Interstim Sacral Nerve Stimulator, a ground breaking new surgical procedure for the treatment of fecal incontinence. Interstim is an implantable device developed and manufactured by Medtronic.

Dr. John Aversa Jr. is the first surgeon in the New England and one of the first surgeons in the country to implant this device for patients with fecal incontinence since its April 2011 FDA approval. Dr. Aversa’s initial experience with this procedure has been very promising.

Interstim therapy is indicated for patients with moderate to severe fecal incontinence that have failed conservative medical or other surgical therapies. In the American FDA trial 41% of patients in the experienced complete resolution of their symptoms and 83% of patients had at least a 50% reduction in the number of fecal incontinent episodes.
